DANDENONG'S much-maligned Shepley Oval wicket, which has been rated the worst in Premier Cricket, is set for a major overhaul.
As revealed in The Journal (February 15) the discontent followed criticism that the pitch was hampering the development of young players, who could leave for clubs with conditions that would improve their game.
Greater Dandenong councillor John Kelly said the council was taking action.
"No one wants to see the club lose players and I'd say to those players who may think of
leaving to hang in there because the council is serious, as
are the staff, about fixing any issues."
As result of the story, Dandenong Cricket Club officials and players, Cr Kelly, and Phil Robertson, of the council's business unit of operations, met last Thursday night.
It was announced that the council would undertake major works on the wicket during the off-season after the testing of core samples uncovered a problem that limited the curators' ability to get good compact when rolling. It also contributed to slow wickets with little bounce.
Dandenong's administration manager Shane Bennett said: "Players understand the commitment of the council, its officers, and curators towards a resolution of a frustrating problem for batsman and bowlers alike at Shepley Oval. This is a great outcome for our players, our club, and the continued growth of Premier Cricket in the Greater Dandenong area."
The works will include the wicket on neighbouring Wilson Oval.
