IN an 'extra-ordinary' morning's play, North Dandenong under 13-3s conceded 112 extras in their round 2 match against Narre North in the Dandenong District Cricket Association.
The extra count consisted of 74 no balls, 19 wides, 18 byes, and two leg byes with extras the top score, and combined with three half centuries from Harry Goy (55), Jayden Edwards (51) and Jeevanjot Singh (50) recorded a Narre junior club record score of 358.
Extras were also the top score with 48 (34 no balls, 11 wides, two no balls and a leg bye) in North Dandenong's total of 82 with opener Naween Dehigaspitiyage Don the main contributor with the bat with 23.
Narre coach Brian Edwards said all the bowlers struggled with their accuracy on the narrow old, worn wicket at Greenslopes Primary School in Dandenong North. "The pitch was one of the old-style narrow ones, the newer pitches are a lot wider. In that age group every kid gets a shot, they bowl four overs each and you get to the point where the kids are struggling to get the ball on the pitch.
"At that age where the kids are just starting out and learning the game, it's not unusual to get a lot of extras, but I don't think I can remember that many (112) in one game.'
Edwards said the scorers nearly ran out of room recording his team's record score.
"The scorers called me over concerned that they were going to run out of room in the runs column, which only goes to 360. It was unreal to watch the way the kids batted and score is definitely a junior club record. We worked it out that the boys were going around at about 10 runs an over until we were bowled in the 34th over."
Extras were also the top scorers in several other under 13-3 games with bowlers also struggling to land the ball on the pitch.
Berwick had 26 extras that included 18 no balls and two wides in its total of 8-92 against Hampton Park, which recorded 31 extras (30 no balls and a wide) in its innings of 6-128cc. Berwick Springs Blue had 23 extras in its total of 4-106 against Endeavour Hills, which had 27 extras.
Cranbourne had 31 extras in its score of 107 against Berwick Springs Green, which in return had 45 extras in its innings of 2-134. HSD had 26 extras in its total of 77 against Springvale South, which had 27 extras in its score of 9-185.
