Tuning up for togetherness

08 Mar, 2010 08:39 AM

DANDENONG is coming together through song.

A new choir is being formed to bring together all the city's communities and everyone is invited.

The Creativity Australia project With One Voice, coming to Noble Park's Paddy O'Donoghue Centre next month, is going to be "bigger than Ben Hur", says program co-ordinator Pippa Wischer.

"We're talking about having over 200 people from all walks of life being involved in the choir.

"We'll have the CEO of an organisation singing next to a migrant, singing next to someone with mental health issues, singing next to someone who is unemployed.

"It will help people connect with people from other cultures and backgrounds."

Choirs had already been established in two other cities, but Dandenong would will be "unique", Ms Wischer said.

"We're trying to take it one step further by looking to hire an employment consultant who can work with the choir members.

"This will be someone who not only sings with you in choir, but you can call them up, get them to help you with strategies to get through a job interview, or help you get what you want out of your job.

"It's not just about building friendships, but improving lives."

Greater Dandenong's arts manager Karen Ward-Smith called the choir "a great example of community engagement and participation".

"The council has made a commitment to offer a venue for the choir's rehearsals, and we look forward to hearing them at local events later in the year."

The choir has already been booked for four major events in the city including

carols by candlelight at Christmas.

There are a number of local community agencies and businesses supporting the choir including legal firm Macpherson and Kelley, the council and VicUrban.

The choir's first session is at 5.15pm at the Paddy O'Donoghue Centre, Buckley Street, Noble Park, on Wednesday, April 14.
