Springvale identity farewelled

08 Mar, 2010 08:37 AM
EILEEN Mary Kirby was well known in Melbourne's sports community as the wife of former race caller and Journal columnist Maurie Kirby.

The Springvale South resident, who has died at the age of 84, was a familiar face in the Springvale and South Springvale area.

The late Mr Kirby owned a bicycle shop in Leonard Avenue, Noble Park, for many years, making many loyal friends from his customers.

Mrs Kirby was born on August 7, 1925, one of a family of three sons and four daughters.

As a young woman she worked at Coles store in Box Hill, later joining the Australian Women's Army Corps.

She met Maurie Kirby at a dance and they were married in 1941.

Mrs Kirby was a popular member of the Combined Probus Club of Noble Park and president of the Noble Park branch of Legacy. She also played golf

and wrote short stories.

She leaves three children - Wayne, Gayle and Leigh - and an adopted son, Robert, of Warracknabeal.

A friend, civil celebrant Dawn Dickson, officiated at the funeral.
