Sandown high-speed plan rattles residents

02 Nov, 2009 09:33 AM
RESIDENTS are gearing up to fight alongside Greater Dandenong Council against Melbourne Racing Club's attempts to have high-speed drive days at Sandown.

The club has appealed to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal over the council's refusal to grant a permit in August for 'drive and ride tuition and motorsport courses' on any day of the week.

Local George Migliaccio said residents hoped to join the council in the fight at the tribunal.

He has started a virtual online petition in support of his cause.

"There is the potential for events to be run seven days per week, thereby giving the residents absolutely no respite from the noise.

"As residents, all we ask is that there is some quiet time where we can actually sit and enjoy private time in our own backyards. Especially during the summer months, our time with family and friends outdoors is precious and we are not being given the opportunity to do this any more.

"We need respite from the noise. Unfortunately, the iconic Australian barbecue in the backyard is becoming a thing of the past in this area because of the noise."

Sandown manager Wade Calderwood said the MRC was confident the council's decision would be overturned.

"The application does not involve any car racing, it relates to clients driving in very safe cars at high speed around the circuit.

"The noise levels emitted from these vehicles is significantly lower than car race meetings (95dBA) and lower than weekend car club events (75dBA)."

Mr Calderwood said some people had "mistakenly assumed" the activities would run seven days a week continuously.

"The permit simply seeks to have the activities be able to take place on any given day of the week [not restricted to weekdays or weekends]."

The council reserved comment until after the hearing, scheduled at the VCAT on January 21 was complete.
