KEYSBOROUGH could be the next suburb to celebrate its 100th birthday, although it may already have passed.

Amateur historian Ray Johnstone, who put together a photographic history of Noble Park for its centenary, believes Keysborough could already be 100, but has never had a birthday celebration.

"As I understand it, the Keys family had influence in the area from the 1900s and before.

"This area used to be part of Brighton - the boundaries went as far as Carrum and out the other way to this side of Berwick.

"A male member of the Keys family, a fiery Irishman, set up a breakaway group from Brighton for Moorabbin, and Keysborough was a part of that."

Mr Johnstone said his information on Keysborough was "sketchy at best" and he was hoping to work on a more detailed history some time next year.

"I'm still waiting for things to settle down from the Noble Park celebrations.

"I'm hoping to focus on Keysborough next year and will probably look at setting up a website or a Facebook."

In the meantime, he said locals could indicate their interest by emailing him at keysboroughbowls@westnet.com.au

"We'll need a lot input from people in the area.

"A number of families will need to be interviewed including the Keys [there are several still in the area], Trebilco [important in early Keysborough], Werrett [again instrumental in the establishment of the Keysborough Public Hall and sporting complex grounds], the Corrigans and so on."

Keysborough Bowls Club will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year after being founded in 1960 and Ray Johnstone is also working on a history of the club.
