LOCAL police-indigenous relations reached a new level last week with the signing of an agreement to establish a liaison committee.
The Police Aboriginal Liaison Committee will be formed to address issues that may arise as a result of contact between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the police within the Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia local government areas - police region 5, division 2.
Divisional commander Superintendent Shane Patton visited the Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-operative last week to meet Aboriginal elder Margaret Gardiner and sign the agreement.
He said the aim of the new committee was to improve communication and develop and foster respect and understanding between the region's police and members of the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
"In line with the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, the committee will seek to ensure that appropriate support, advice and guidance is made available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who come into contact with police, whether that is as a victim, a witness or a suspect."
Superintendent Patton said the committee would provide advice and guidance to police regarding "best practice" when engaging with members of the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
