BIG plans are afoot to commemorate Noble Park's centenary celebrations, with Greater Dandenong Council investigating a revamp of the Douglas Street civic space.
The celebrations, in October last year, brought thousands of people into Noble Park and the organising committee pushed for a lasting memorial.
The Journal can reveal the council has secured federal funding and hopes to use it for a revamp of the civic space next to the Noble Park railway station car park, subject to federal approval.
Cr Roz Blades said the council had preliminary ideas, but it would be "up to the community" to decide on how the space was used.
"We've managed to get about $226,000 for a post-centenary civic space in Noble Park.
"It's looking like it will be a nice place for residents to go and sit in Noble Park, with maybe some murals, trees and other public art.
"We'll be looking to involve schools and it will be a beautiful commemoration for the centenary, which created so much positive feeling in the the town."
Cr Blades stressed the community and traders would be consulted on the plans. "The exact plan is by no means decided until we've spoken to the people.
"We want to hear from residents because it's their town and we want their input."
Centenary committee chairman Phil Reed said he was excited by the plans.
"The centenary celebrations showed how much our community appreciates coming together to share our stories and our culture. I know these are only proposals at the moment but I'm sure all Noble Park residents will welcome the opportunity to create a lasting legacy of our centenary year.
