Campaign dishes up recipe for harmony

RESTAURATEURS in Dandenong's Little India precinct are urging people to gobble down a curry on February 24 as part of a Vindaloo Against Violence movement.

In the wake of perceptions that Indians have been persecuted in Melbourne, the movement calls on residents to dine at their local Indian restaurant on Wednesday, February 24, in a show of support for the Indian community.

Naveen Yadav, of Bikaner Sweets and Curry Cafe, in Foster Street, said that while he did not believe recent attacks on Indian students were racially motivated, he would welcome the support of the wider community on February 24.

"Anything like this is positive. We have lots of Aussie visitors, but it might be an opportunity for people to sample something they wouldn't normally eat. I would hope all the Indian restaurants and cafes in Dandenong are full on February 24."

Mr Yadav said he had lived in Dandenong for 11 years and did not fear for his safety.

Nasir Chaudhry, of Punjab Sweet Centre, said his Mason Street shop would "welcome all-comers for a curry and a lassi" on February 24.

"I've been in Australia for 25 years and the restaurant has been here for 20.

"For the Indian community, we hear a lot about the incidents in the media, it sounds like it might be some racism, but I've never experienced persecution. We all face some incidents, but that is part of life."

The VAV website states that February 24 will be a peaceful protest, showing the Indian community that "we will not turn a blind eye to violence in our city".

"How cool would it be if Melbourne displayed a show of force by all going out and eating Indian food on a certain night, to embrace and show solidarity with our local Indian community?"
