DANDENONG West Cricket Club has been cleared of any wrongdoing after allegations that it had been playing more than one overseas player in its first XI.
West president Jason Goodes confirmed that the Dandenong District Cricket Association had requested proof the players were legitimate, though the association itself would not confirm any investigation.
"[We've] proven our innocence. We were never guilty and we hope this will stop all the rumour mongers," he said.
Under DDCA rule 23, clubs can only have a maximum of one overseas player in their first XI. A club, however, can have any number of approved overseas players in other teams.
DDCA vice-president Peter Barnes would not confirm if there had been an investigation into West. "As far as we're concerned there are no issues with overseas players based on what we know at Dandenong West.
"We may, from time to time, do audits on things and that would be a privacy issue if we did. Whatever our dealings are with clubs on things like this is not for public information."
DDCA secretary Ray Nicholls said the association wrote to clubs in late November reinforcing rule 23 in relation to its Twenty20 competition.
"I understand that some clubs may have played more than one approved overseas player before this advice, but to the best of my knowledge, this has not happened since."
Barnes said there were no question marks over any other club in relation to rule 23.
