 Closure call on Buckley Street

Closure call on Buckley Street

02 Nov, 2009 08:03 AM
A KEYSBOROUGH man was so impressed with the space created by the closure of Buckley Street, pictured, for Noble Park's centenary celebrations, that he has suggested it become permanent.

Buckley Street was closed between Douglas Street and Buckley's Lane for the suburb's birthday celebrations last Saturday week.

In a letter to The Journal, Matthew Kirwan stated that closing off a section permanently would be "worthwhile", in a similar vein to Oakleigh's popular Eaton Mall.

"While enjoying the celebrations I noticed how effective closing off Buckley Street was in creating a civic space for the celebrations. Maybe closing off a section...could be considered as worthwhile on a permanent basis."

Greater Dandenong's development services director Mal Baker said the matter of closing Buckley Street was not "simple...nor one to take lightly".

"There is potential for adverse results due to changes in traffic flow. Traders can suffer significant loss of trade in the immediate and adjacent areas."

Mr Kirwan stated the closure, if it were to go ahead, should not impede access to the Noble Park fire station.

Western Port operations manager Trevor Owen said CFA "would be happy to be involved" in discussions around closing the street, providing any proposal "didn't reduce CFA's ability to respond to fires and incidents".

Noble Park Centenary Committee chairman Phil Reed said the space was "terrific for a community event, but...I'm not convinced Noble Park could maintain a mall like that".

Mr Baker said the Noble Park Structure Plan provided for the development of the centre around increased civic space within the area bounded by Douglas, Buckley, Noble and Leonard streets.
