SENIOR police have denied a local MP's claims the Dandenong bashing of a traffic cop was due to a lack of policing resources.
South Eastern Metropolitan MP Gordon Rich-Phillips condemned the attack on Senior Constable Danni Sangston as appalling and called for stronger penalties for offenders convicted of assaulting emergency workers.
"It seems even the police are not safe in Dandenong now. This incident highlights the need for better protection and resources for police."
The assault happened after Senior Constable Sangston intercepted a Holden Commodore carrying four men at Dennis Street, Dandenong, about 5.45pm last Thursday for licence and registration checks.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Evans said Senior Constable Sangston had approached the car before waiting for the back-up he had requested to arrive.
"We had sufficient police last night... I don't think that can in any way be associated with a lack of police resources."
* Police announced on Friday evening that three men had been questioned over the assault.
A Dandenong man, 18, and a Hampton Park man, 28, both appeared before an out-of-sessions court and were remanded to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday. A Hampton Park man, 25, has been bailed to appear in the same court on the same date. All three have been charged with assault.
A Berwick man, 34, and a Doveton man, 26, are expected to be charged on summons with being accessories after the fact.
